University Library & Information Centre, MAFSU, Nagpur

The Maharashtra State bestowed with rich and diverse animal resources. For sustainable management, conservation, and augmentation of these animal and fishery resources, Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University was established on 3rd December 2000with its headquarter at Orange City Nagpur. Considering the need for information seekers working in the field of university jurisdiction University Library and Information Centre was established in 2001at headquarter with the mission to acquire information resources, organize and make it available for users and preserve for the future. University library rendering the services and disseminating the information to Six Veterinary College, Two Colleges of Fishery Science, Two Colleges of Dairy Technology, and One Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary Science.


State Government has rendered the financial support to construct independent Library building; it has a total built-up area of 3261.51 m2 with 1118.6 m2, 1071.24 m2, and 1074.67 m2 on ground, first and second floor respectively. The Library building has specious reading accommodation with every level with a stacking area where readers can consult publications under an open access system. The reading room facility remains open 24x7 x365days.


The Financial support provided by the ICAR several noteworthy developments took place during the period under report. They enabled this library and libraries of constituent colleges to improve its collection and infrastructure facilities. Since the establishment, the university library has made consistent efforts to excel in library and information services. University Library has entered the era of information technology using ICT for information storage and retrieval since day one. Computerization of the University library was successfully upgraded by migrating from commercial software to Integrated Library Management System Software “KOHA” on cloud computing with the facility of web-based online public access catalog. Implementation of KOHA LMS brings all branch libraries under one umbrella and controlled by central library, libraries can share the resources, procured the quality resources, improved the services, developed coordination and library cooperation within jurisdiction to manage library system and services skillfully with uniform regulation for management, organization, and services designed and developed with LMS of MAFSU. The RFID technology has also been implemented for library management, security, services, surveillance System using CCTVs and Wifi connectivity.


The present collection of the University Library is 41733 with sufficient numbers of relevant textbooks including 741 e-books, 31 Print Journals, 31 e-Journals, 5125 Back Volumes, 3 CD-Rom databases, encyclopedia, etc., 3269 PG and Ph.D. dissertations and other reading material related to Animal Science, Fisheries and Dairy Technology. Library offers full-text book support to the students in their course program through various services such as book banks and reference books. The entire collection of thesis digitized and uploaded on the ICAR repository portal, i.e., “KRISHIKOSH." Consortium for e-Resources in Agriculture facility has been available with MAFSU University Library.


Library resources provided to faculty, staff, and students are integral to the teaching and learning environment at MAFSU. Electronic resources, journal articles, and catalog items are the foundation of an institution of higher education. The University Library provides access to multiple resources through services such as CeRa, Krishikosh, Ideal, e-books, e-Journals, OA Journals, Databases, etc.


The library offers a VET, BEAST, FSTA, CABI VMR Databases to support research. Participation in DDR Services and Interlibrary Loan makes available several resources not owned by MAFSU Library. If Patron needs help finding the appropriate resource or developing a search strategy, the Librarian and staff are available for in-person consultations, or via the email or Phone. The library is well known for friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere. Student's spirit shines in everything we do, from daily tasks to special events organized by the college or by students throughout the Year.


The Agricultural Education Division of ICAR has been rendering useful financial support to the Library Strengthening for promoting excellence in the library system. University can be gauged by 16th rank among all SAU and 3rd rank among the Veterinary University. University Library plays a significant role in this achievement of University by acquiring, organizing, managing the information resources and services appropriately.


University Library prides itself on its high-tech, high-touch approach to education with its utilization of technology in a caring and friendly environment. Library professionals here to developed information literate students who have the skill to succeed in this University and to become productive citizens of this global community.
